What is My Risk of Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer is a horrible thing for anyone to go through. Sometimes, there is nothing people can do to prevent it, or know that they need to start treating for it, until it is too late. Fortunately, most of the time, this terrible cancer can be prevented. There are certain things people do and partake in that directly contribute to diseases that lead to oral cancer. This has become common knowledge since more research has been done on what causes cancer and what people can do to prevent it and treat it.

How Do People Get Oral Cancer?

There are several ways people can be victims of disease and oral cancer. Tobacco is a main contributor to deadly diseases and cancers. Carcinogens found in chewing tobacco, cigars, and cigarettes have been linked directly to lung cancer, heart disease, oral cancer, and others. This is especially true with people who have been using tobacco for decades. Adults who drink alcohol on a regular basis are subject to oral cancer as well. The alcohol is absorbed through the tissue in the mouth, working to kill beneficial bacteria, and cells that your body needs. When a mouth is exposed to that environment for years, oral cancer can rear its ugly head, and work hard to destroy a person's mouth.

The Unlucky Few…

It is so unfortunate that some people must battle oral cancer just because of their genes. Some families are at risk for cancer more than others. If your family has an increased risk, it is a good idea to talk to a doctor, or your dentist, to know more about it, and learn what you can do to try and prevent it. people who battle HPV, or the human papillomavirus, are also at a high risk for oral cancer. Again, if you have HPV, talk to your doctor, and get regular checkups. Also, it has been found that very young children who have been exposed to far too much sun have been known to develop certain cancers, including oral cancer. Parents must be diligent about how much sun their little ones get. Keep in mind, that this is very rare.

The best thing to do is to talk to your dentists in Hudson Valley and even your doctor to find out more information. Those who use tobacco on a daily basis should be aware that the chances of them getting cancer are very high, and that it is something they will just have to deal with. for the unlucky ones, please get regular checkups, so if you do find that you have early stages of oral cancer, you and your doctors can fight it. remember, a diagnosis of oral cancer is not a death warrant.
